About Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC)

The WSCC is an arm's length government agency responsible for administering the Workers' Compensation Acts, Safety Acts, Explosives Use Acts and the Mine Health and Safety Acts.

Together, with their partners, the WSCC provides services to almost 40,000 workers and 4,000 employers across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, processes over 3,000 claims annually, and conducts over 1,000 inspections annually to ensure the safety of northern workplaces. The WSCC is unique in Canada as it is the only workers' compensation organization in the country to insure workers across more than one province or territory.

About the Opportunity

WSCC is looking for a full-time Assessment Auditor based in Iqaluit, NU, or Yellowknife, NT. Occasional work related travel may be required.

Reporting to the Manager, Audit, the Assessment Auditor is responsible for developing and implementing compliance audits of employer payroll records to ensure compliance with the Workers’ Compensation Acts and regulations. This role plays a critical part in protecting the integrity of the Workers’ Protection Fund by identifying errors, mitigating revenue risks, and educating employers on their responsibilities.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in the development of the annual payroll audit plan
  • Reviewing statistical and economic data to identify high-risk employers or groups
  • Establishing audit scope, timelines, and resource needs
  • Preparing and maintaining schedules and reports on audit activities
  • Conducting desk and field audits of employer payroll records
  • Verifying employer classifications and recommending updates as needed
  • Liaising with government agencies to gather and provide audit information
  • Determining and preparing payroll adjustments and audit reports
  • Conducting preliminary and exit interviews with employers
  • Explaining audit results, policies, and employer responsibilities
  • Mentoring and providing guidance on audit procedures and practices
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of WSCC programs and services

About You

To qualify, you will need completion of an advanced level of a recognized Canadian accounting designation or completion of the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation. A minimum of 2 years’ experience conducting compliance audits will also be essential. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Auditing Standards and accounting principles
  • Knowledge of industry and business operations across small, medium, and large organizations
  • Strong research, investigative, and interviewing abilities
  • Proficiency with databases, Microsoft Office Suite, and various accounting systems
  • Ability to interpret legislation, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to speak French is an asset
